Flores & Komodo Islands Travel Guide (2025): Backpacker Tips, Itineraries & Hidden Gems

Why Visit Flores & the Komodo Islands?
This is my ultimate Flores & Komodo islands travel guide— with practical tips and stories from my journey. Flores and the Komodo Islands are Indonesia’s wild side — less polished than Bali, but full of raw beauty, dragon encounters, and world-class snorkelling. For backpackers, digital nomads, and adventure seekers, it’s a place where the magic of nature still outweighs mass tourism.
My own journey here didn’t initially go as planned — after a motorbike accident in Lombok, I had to scrap my original island-hopping route and instead flew into Flores from Bali. But what could have been a setback turned into one of the best trips of my travels: a three-day sailing adventure through Komodo National Park.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Komodo National Park covers 669 square miles (1,733 square kilometers) of islands and pristine ocean. From spectacular sunrises to sunsets filled with bats in flight, from pink sand beaches just off the most dazzling coral reefs to mountain peaks and views to dream of… not forgetting encounters with Komodo Dragons (the world’s largest lizard,)… this is one place that stands out in my memories for all the right reasons!
Best Time to Visit Flores & Komodo Islands
- Dry Season (April–November): Best for sailing, snorkeling, and hiking. Clear skies, calm seas.
- Rainy Season (December–March): Lush landscapes, fewer crowds, but choppier seas.
My trip: I visited in mid-June — still green and lush from the rainy season, but with perfect sailing weather.
Top 10 Things to Do in Flores & Komodo Islands
Many of the islands listed below can be visited via full day boat tours from Labuan Bajo. However, I highly recommend a multi-day boat tour to make the most out of this stunning area! Check out day tour packages here:
1. Padar Island Sunrise Hike
One of the most famous views in Indonesia. I climbed pre-dawn, puffing up the steep path, but the golden sunrise over jagged islands made it unforgettable. Tip: Get there early to beat the crowds.
2. Komodo Island (Dragons!)
The moment I stepped off the pier, a massive dragon was basking on the sand. With a ranger guide, I walked the trails and saw more of these prehistoric creatures.
3. Pink Beach
A surreal stretch of rose-colored sand, ideal for snorkeling. Bring your own gear — the boat equipment isn’t great.
4. Manta Point
Snorkeling here, I floated above giant manta rays gliding like underwater birds.
5. Kanawa Island & Coral Reefs
Crystal waters, coral gardens, sea turtles, and reef sharks.
6. Kalong (Bat) Island
At sunset, thousands of bats streamed from the mangroves above our boat — a sky full of wings that went on for thirty minutes. Honestly it was one of the most memorable and majestic moments of the trip!
7. Labuan Bajo Town
A small but social base for trips. Don’t expect nightlife, but it’s easy to meet other travelers.
8. Kelimutu Crater Lakes (Inland Flores)
Three lakes that change color — a magical inland excursion.
9. Wae Rebo Village
Stay overnight in traditional cone-shaped huts in the mountains. Locals in this farming community still practice traditional rituals and live very simply: You can only reach Wae Rebo by hiking, and electricity only operates for a short part of the evening.
10. Cunca Rami Waterfall
A lush inland waterfall, great for a day trip from Labuan Bajo.
Where to Eat in Labuan Bajo
On my boat: Fresh fish, rice, vegetables, and sometimes chicken — simple but delicious.
In town:
- Siesta Komodo Hostel served surprisingly good meals.
- Backpacker favorites: Warung Mama, Bajo Bakery, Le Pirate Café.
- Street food market (check evenings) for cheap, tasty nasi goreng and grilled seafood.
How to Get to Flores & the Komodo Islands
By Boat
3-day boat trips from Lombok stop at Komodo — These tend to be a backpacker option with very basic shared accommodation. Many a backpacker I talked to said this trip was a highlight for them, with lots of drinking and socialising. It involves long day at sea and often include snorkelling experience with whale sharks.
Be warned: many of the companies offer the whale shark experience by feeding the Whale sharks, which keeps them in the area and throws off their natural migration instincts. This practice is not healthy for the animal or the environment, so I wouldn’t recommend it for ethical or conscious-minded travellers. Furthermore, you only get one day in the Komodo islands national park.
My recommendation: Fly to Labuan Bajo Airport (LBJ) and get a 3 day boat trip from there! This gives you the best of both worlds: 3 FULL DAYS exploring the Komodo Islands national park, social boat experience and a choice of budget to luxury options
By Air
Fly to Labuan Bajo Airport (LBJ) from Bali, Lombok, or Jakarta. There are plenty of low cost internal flights and the view of the islands from the air is spectacular!
By Motorcycle
A friend I met rode all the way from Lombok to Flores by bike — ferries connect the islands. It took her 2-3 days in total and a true adventure for confident riders. It also means you have flexibility to stay on and explore Flores by motorbike if you feel like extending your stay!
Getting Around Flores: Transport Tips for Backpackers
- Labuan Bajo is walkable.
- Scooters are easy to rent (but roads can be steep and tricky).
- Inland Flores: rent a motorbike or hire a driver.
Tip from my experience: It took me two days of asking around at travel agents to find a last-minute boat (but I did manage to get a small discount on the price). Book early if you’re short on time.
Flores & Komodo Budget Guide
- Backpacker: $30–50/day (hostel dorms, street food, basic boat).
- Mid-Range: $70–120/day (Siesta Hostel private rooms, better meals, tours).
- Luxury: $200+/day (private villas, liveaboard yachts).
Note: Komodo trips are pricier than Bali or Lombok due to permits and remoteness. Even my budget boat felt more expensive than other islands
